Caliban in The Tempest ââ¬ËThe Tempestââ¬â¢ is the magical story of the ship-wrecked inhabitants of an island. It deals with many serious themes such as; nature/nurture, power, magic and treachery but ââ¬Ëthe seriousness is never allowed to cause disquiet in the audienceââ¬â¢. Many of these themes are still relevant today. The Tempest is, in effect, ââ¬Ëa fairytale complete with magical occurrences, suspension of the laws of nature and a happy endingââ¬â¢. Caliban is an interesting an important character in ââ¬ËThe Tempestââ¬â¢. He brings to the play issues that have a humorous side but are also serious, for example the treatment of inferiors. This also proves he is child-like in his thinking. From a directorââ¬â¢s point of view, Caliban would be bitter, loud and slow in this scene. He enters saying a curse on Prospero, so he should burst out of his cave shouting these lines at Prospero with real feeling as though he has spent time in his cave thinking about the curse. He would speak in a loud, forceful voice and get into his curse. The audience would probably be shocked, slightly frightened and mildly disgusted with Calibanââ¬â¢s appearance and demeanour. Caliban is used in this scene to raise the issue of the treatment of servants and the master/servant relationship. Although the audience know by know that Caliban tried to rape Miranda, Prospero treats him very harshly which reflects the poor treatment of servants in Prosperoââ¬â¢s time. Behavioral issues The sudden and significant change in the behavior and attitude of an individual, which might be indicative of various mental health issues, are known as behavioral issues of that person (Forrest, 1996). Assessment of the change of perceptions regarding the specific needs of people with time: The particular sections of the populations who have learning disabilities and/ or issues related with the retention of memory are generally considered as people who have specific needs. Such portion of the population can be considered as a heterogeneous group in context to their specific disabilities, the degrees of their disability and various problems associated with it, their age and /or typical health conditions (Fox, 1998). Previously, the government of the United Kingdom used to run hospitals for the purpose of providing specific needs to those people who have been subjected to prolonged mental and/ or physical disabilities. However, the quality of treatment available at these hospitals started deteriorating as more and more people became aware of the services and decided to access them. At a certain point of time, the conditioned worsened so much that government decided to put an end to the system. The professional employees who used to work in these hospitals were absorbed by various specialized work communities which provided services to that section of the population with specific needs. As these work communities provided specialized care to each specific problem, the effectiveness of the treatment increased through this process and it was possible to bring a larger section of the population under such health care system (Gravestock, 1996). The success of this system has been able to change the long existing perceptions of the common mass to that section of people who have specific needs. Analysis of the impact of social policy, legislation, culture and/ or society on the various options of social and/or health care services which are available to people having specific requirements: LEGISLATION : At present, the following legislative provisions ensure that proper health and/ or social care services are available to the people with specific needs: Health Act 1999: ensure that the social and/ or health care services providers will be able to independently maintain their own budgets, will be able integrate the services provided by them and develop the arrangements of various leading commissions. Personal Health Budgets: An initiative taken by the government of the country for enhancing the quality of the social care provided to the adults. Using this policy, the patients are able to claim the charges of their respective health care providers from the government. SOCIAL POICY: Trusts have been founded for the provision of care to the adults and children and at present there are more than 10 organizations who are working in this domain. SOCIETY: The society plays very important role in the way a person When the persons with specific needs are excluded from the society because of their illness and/ or no so proper attitudes, the health conditions of these persons worsen further. The social rights of such people to receive proper and dignified treatment and compassion are ensured by the various legislative laws introduced by the government (Bradshaw, 2000). CULTURE: Unfortunately many such cultural factors still exist in our society which results in discriminatory attitude towards specific races. Adult persons are often discriminated due to the color of their skin and or their ethnicity, all the while making more and more vulnerable to various mental disorders. Even various social and/ or health care service providers discard patients due to such discriminatory attitudes. Such long existing discriminations are the primary reasons behind the physical and mental abuse that the elderly people often have to experience, leaving them in isolated situations. However, according to the primary investigations, his challenging behavior is just an indication of the suffering he experiences due to his disabilities (Mansell, 1994). The following course of treatment procedure has been devised for him: A thorough investigation of his health conditions and associated behavioral issues. A two way treatment process so as to treat his physical disabilities along with the behavioral issues that he had been projecting. Therapy sessions for his anger management issues. Constant communication with him regarding his health issues. Required medication under the supervision of medical experts. The various domain experts whose collaboration would be necessary for this process are: the social workers, occupational therapists, community nurses, physiologists and psychiatrists. The government has provided the responsibility of maintain a close relationship with the local authorities, voluntary organizations and/or other such agencies on the trust care commissioners, so as to develop strategies for the improvement of the well being of the local communities. The framework model strategized for Health Promotion: This particular model serves the following purposes: Promotion, protection and improvement of the health of the general mass. Making sure that the best health care strategies are practiced. Maintenance of a strategy of value for money so that the services are available at conservative pricing. Evaluation of the services which are available in the locality in order to support individuals who have specific needs: The United Kingdom has various policies and strategies that are applicable in the sectors of the social and/ or health care services of the general population. The National Healthcare Services or the NHS is the primary system that has been implemented in order to make such care systems available to those individuals who have specific needs. The National Health Care services provide various services in the under-mentioned domains: Emergency care unit General practitioner services Services related dental procedures Services related to various mental health issues Various hospital services Services related to eye care and so on and so forth. The NHS projects make various services available to the people which can be used under numerous emergency and nonemergency medical conditions. The NHS111 is one such service which the users of this system frequently exploit in order to talk directly to trained doctors and/ or other medical practitioners in case of medical emergencies that are not life threatening. The walk in centers that are run by the department of national health care services can also be used to treat minor injuries and / or illnesses. Another helpful tool available under this set of services is the symptom checker, which is an online application that can be assessed by the users of the system for evaluating their own health conditions. The psychological intervention will provide mental strength and stimulation to the patient, which in turn will help the process initiated by the physical intervention. This specific intervention would act towards reducing the stress, depression and the anger issues of the patient. The educational intervention will provide knowledge to the patient about his own health conditions, which will be helpful to him to understand the purpose of the treatment that he is undergoing. This knowledge transfer will be helpful in reducing the anxiety of the patient towards the treatment regime he is going through and will ensure his active participation in the process. Discussion on the probable impact of the developments that are emerging in order to support those individuals who have specific needs: Various innovative ideas and methods have been introduced in the sector of health and/ or social care system by the Government of the United Kingdom in the past few years, some of which have been discussed below: Personal health budgets The Government of the United Kingdom has introduced this initiative under the NHS projects. This particular project aims at helping the general mass manage their care services as it suits to them. The budget being mentioned in this initiative will be utilized to support the health and/ or social care need as identified by the user. The budget will be planned by an individual user in agreement with the NHS team of the locality. The project will be able to provide a greater control of an individual on the healthcare of services being availed, particularly in those cases where the patient is suffering from some chronic ailment and/ or some other disabilities. The Personal health care budget system has been devised to work just the way various personal budgets are maintained by the common mass in order to manage the money they need to pay to their social care providers. Social work reform board The Social Work Reform Board has been working towards the development of a framework of Professional which will be able to clearly indicate the level of knowledge, the skill set and the professional capacity of any social worker. In designing the framework, the board has proposed a set of nine capabilities which should be possessed by all social workers irrespective of the status of their working experience and/ or the domain of their expertise. Various psychological conditions which might include fear, anxiety, temperament issues, dependency on some person, sense of frustration and/ or loss. Anxieties related to various social factors like that of ethnicity, relationship issues, and/ or cultural differences and much more. Description of how the social and/ or health care services are affected due to of challenging behavior: The people who express various symptoms of challenging behavior often posses such characteristics which are not at all apprehensible by the common mass. Most of the times to prefer to remain in isolation and maintain no contact with their family members, friends and /or neighbors. It has been also noticed that very often the activities regarded as challenging behavior are associated with various problems associated with the retention of memory. People who suffer from mental disabilities are often found to have problems while communicating with others, and such disabilities are one of the greatest factors behind their inability to carry on with their career. The care providers are often negatively affected due to the abusive behavior being committed by the patients: The most significant risk factors of challenging behavior are being discussed in the following section: Very often the caregivers express their inability to adapt to the behavior of their patients and complain of high stress levels induced by the abusive attitude of their patients. The continuous high stress level often leads to depression in case of the care givers themselves. As the caregivers themselves lose patience and they themselves face periods of depression, the support that they used to provide to their patients deteriorate in both quality and quantity. The care givers themselves might at some point of time start abusing the patients. As a result of this fiasco, the physical and/ or mental illness that the elderly patients have been suffering from increase manifold, thus increasing their characteristic physical and/ or verbal aggression. Such patients with prior history of domestic violence often experience periods of such aggression that they are excluded from the social circle. Thus it can be said that the effects of challenging behavior are such that they can actually negatively affect the care giver system itself. Analysis of the strategies that are used to deal with the challenging behaviors of individual having specific needs The various legislative and/ or social policies and methodologies and / or procedures implemented by the government and set of capabilities implemented by social work reform board make the employer of a social worker responsible for all the actions performed by the social worker. As the rules and/ or standards are nationalized, it is the responsibility of each and every social worker to abide by them. The rules and regulations formulated by the government ensure that the employees associated with social and / or health care system fully apprehend the range of their responsibilities and act in accordance. The rules also make sure that the care givers are provided with proper training and / or developmental skills for those set of works that will be assigned to them. The care givers should have respects towards the rights of the users of the health care system and under no circumstances should behave in such a manner that could be derogatory towards the self respect of the users and/ or be harmful to their physical and/ or mental health. The council associated with social care system have laid down all these instructions in the The legislative rules implemented by the government also put immense emphasis on the provision of extra help to those people who have very specific requirements. The legislative partnerships have ensured that with each passing day the services being provided to the users of health and/ or social care systems become more and more comprehensive, besides being more refined in terms of the quality services being provided. Such partnerships have immensely helped to build such principles and/or values that are shared across the service providers, agreement in various changes that previously existed in the policies, readiness of the sectors of health and/ or social care so as to in explore various innovative options to provide services, determination of the boundaries of each and every service being provided, agreement in the roles being played for purchasing services and providing them, proper identification of the resources required for services, and most importantly the policies of putti ng emphasis on the trust that the users have on the system and care givers. However, it should also be kept in mind that the implementation of all these policies and guidelines are entirely in the hands the care givers. On the other hand the people having special requirements are often very dependent on the care givers for all their daily activities. Beet Cells Lab Report Paper A spectrophotometer will be used to measure this variable by measuring the absorbency value of the beautician in solution after each treatment. The results of this study will show the necessary temperature to keep the vacuole intact. It would influence common agriculture practices by indicating a more ideal environment setting and techniques. At the same time, it would allow scientists to have a better understanding of cell structure and functions. We hypothesize that beet cells in a high temperature environment will release more beautician in comparison to beet cells in a room temperature environment. The increased temperature will increase the damage of membranes, thus no longer able to enclose beautician within the vacuole. In contrast, as temperature decreases, the amount of beautician will also decrease due to the less damage of the membrane. Materials and methods Seven discs of mm beet root were cut with a razor blade and rinsed with tap water in a plastic beaker for 10 minutes. Each beet disc was then submersed in a eager of water with temperature of either -ICC, ICC, ICC, ICC, ICC and room temperature for precisely 2 minutes. The exact time of extraction was recorded when the discs were placed into large test tube with white caps (labeled with temperatures) immediately after the water bath. The test tubes were then rested on the bench for a total of 10 minutes and were vortexes at 5 minutes and 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, 5 ml of solution from the large test tubes was pipettes into small test tubes and each small test tube was then inserted into the phosphorescent for measurements of absorbency. To obtain these results, we used the standard curve for beautician (Figure 1) to figure out the concentration, since the value of beautician absorbency could be measured using the spectrophotometer. From the graph (Figure 2), between the temperature of ICC, ICC, ICC, it was observed that the ranges of concentration as narrow, which shows the increase concentration was quite steady. Generally, an increase of temperature would cause an increase in absorbency of beautician, thus an increase of concentration. However, it was also observed that at -ICC and ICC, there was a sudden jump of data (Table 2-2). Originally, the absorbency measured for samples in -ICC and ICC were 1. 700 and 0. 845; the concentrations were 425 pm and 180 pm respectively. However, because both of these absorbency readings were greater than the highest absorbency value in our standard curve (Figure 1), a calculation of diluted concentration for these two samples was necessary. Therefore, using the formula Cue = Cd/D where Cue = concentration of undiluted (original) sample, Cd = concentration of diluted sample and D = dilution (which is 1/5 in this experiment), we calculated that the diluted concentration for the sample in ICC is 85 pm and for the sample in ICC is 36 pm. As we inserted these data on the graph (Figure 2), concentration of beautician for samples in -ICC and ICC still dominate in comparison to others. This sudden increase of concentration allowed us to understand that the topmasts membrane is easier to be damage in extreme temperature. Discussion Our original hypothesis about the effect of high temperature on beet cell membrane was correct; as temperature increases, the concentration of beautician increases as well. The beet root sample in temperature ICC had a higher absorbency value and concentration of beautician in comparison to other samples due to the membrane damage. The experiment of lipid membranes performed by the University of Osaka concluded a similar result. They found that the membranes were stable at physiological temperatures, but there were release of DOC from lollipops after heating, which indicates that the membranes have been damaged (Keno et al. 2010). However, our data showed that the sample in -ICC had an even higher absorbency value and concentration of beautician than the sample in ICC. Therefore, we concluded that temperature -ICC caused even more damage on membrane than high temperature ICC. Either way, both of these data suggested in order for membrane to keep colloidal stability and exp erience minimal damage, imperative of environment must not be extreme (Keno et al. , 2010). Otherwise the structure of the biological molecule will be disrupted, leading to malfunction of osmotic balance and improper functioning of the cell (Campbell et al, 2008). We began our experiment with individual dilution and procedure for each temperature treatment, which took a long period of time. Therefore we had to start performing 2 different temperature treatments at the same time. This may have caused some inaccuracy in extraction times and the time intervals in which solutions needed to be vortex. We also spilled some of the solution while attempting to transfer the solutions to the small test tubes. This may have caused some variations in the range of some of the measurements. In order to improve and be able to acquire more accurate results next time, we will ensure there is a sufficient amount of time for each temperature treatment. We will also ensure accurate extraction times and time intervals for overexerting solutions, as well as avoiding any solution spillage. This experimental design was valid. However, in order to improve and be able to acquire more detailed results here number of manipulating variable should increase.

The colors that are being used in my advertisement are grey, black, bright orange, and white. What is being suggested in this advertisement is that you should wear the lip balm shown in the magazine because it will give you baby lips. In the article the picture is of a pretty woman whose whole face is grey, except her lips. The rest of the article is in very light colors making it so that the lip balm and the models lips are the two things stand out the most. Both of them are in a bright orange color that makes them stand out more than anything else in the picture. Also in my advertisement there is a model, she is a female, although you canââ¬â¢t see all her body and just her face you can tell that she is pretty just by the way her eyelashes and eyebrows are done. The expression on her face is as if the woman is going to give someone a kiss. She has her eyes closed but she looks like if sheââ¬â¢s in the mood of kissing someone and feels good about that. All these little details are made to imply that with this lip balm everyone will want to get kissed by your baby lips. In the picture there is also a before and after picture of someoneââ¬â¢s lips but you canââ¬â¢t really tell the difference. Words are a big help in advertising. The words call the readerââ¬â¢s attention and also can sometimes fool the buyer. In my ad it says ââ¬Å"In one week your lips will be visibly renewed.â⬠Although it says that, there is no given proof of it. They donââ¬â¢t provide us with a survey of people or percentage of people who says that. Also the word baby lip is in bright orange to get the viewers attention because it stands out who wouldnââ¬â¢t want baby lips right? There is also a small caption next to the bright orange lip balm that says that itââ¬â¢s an exclusive lip renew formula. Furthermore the model is saying that she wants a clinical strength care with a kick of color to get woman to buy it because not only does it help you care for your lips but it also gives you some color. The intended audience for the lip balm is young woman or any type of woman who want to get baby looking lips and wants to stand out at the same time. The woman who are interested in this lip balm are probably the ones who are looking for non dull lips and instead interested in lips that are more moisturized and lips that stand out. Lastly, advertising helps buyers learn more about the product but it also tricks buyers into buying stuff that most of the time doesnââ¬â¢t work.

That is why the whole body has to be educated to use the whole spectrum of human capacity. Therefore fundamental principles of the education system have to be changed in order to send the next generation into a better future. In my personal experience, around two years ago when I was in high school, I lost all of my confidence and didnââ¬â¢t know what I have to do. My score were lower than other students in the class.The teachers used to ignore me and treated me as a troublemaker. After finishing some internship in America, Iââ¬â¢ve realized that I was not that kind. Peopl e who I had met in America, especially my boss and my co-worker, encourage me to do what I really want to do. And finally I have a confidence that I can do everything if I want to. Good morning. How are you? It's been great, hasn't it? I've been blown away by the whole thing. In fact, I'm leaving. (Laughter)à There have been three themes, haven't there,à running through the conference, which are relevantà to what I want to talk about.One is the extraordinary evidence of human creativityà in all of the presentations that we've hadà and in all of the people here. Just the variety of ità and the range of it. The second is thatà it's put us in a place where we have no idea what's going to happen,à idea how I have an interest in education ââ¬âà actually, what I find is everybody has an interest in education. Don't you? I find this very interesting. say youà actually, you're not often at dinner parties, frankly, if you work in education. (Laughter) You're not asked . And you're never asked back, curiously. That's strange to me.But if you are, and you say to somebody,à you know, they say, ââ¬Å"What do you do? â⬠à and you say you work in education,à you can see the blood run from their face. They're like,à ââ¬Å"Oh my God,â⬠you know, ââ¬Å"Why me? My one night out all week. â⬠(Laughter)à But if you ask about their education,à they pin you to the wall. Because it's one of those thingsà that goes deep with people, am I right? Like religion, and money and other things. I have a big interest in education, and I think we all do. We have a huge vested interest in it,à partly because it's education that's meant toà take us into this future that we can't grasp.If you think of it, children starting school this yearà will be retiring in 2065. Nobody has a clue ââ¬âdespite all the expertise that's been on parade for the past four days ââ¬âà what the world will look likeà in five years' time. And yet we'r e meantà to be educating them for it. So the unpredictability, I think,à is extraordinary. And the third part of this is thatà we've all agreed, nonetheless, on theà really extraordinary capacities that children have ââ¬âà their capacities for innovation. I mean, Sirena last night was a marvel,à wasn't she?Just seeing what she could do. And she's exceptional, but I think she's not, so to speak,à exceptional in the whole of childhood. What you have there is a person of extraordinary dedicationà who found a talent. And my contention is,à all kids have tremendous talents. And we squander them, pretty ruthlessly. So I want to talk about education andà I want to talk about creativity. My contention is thatà creativity now is as important in education as literacy,à and we should treat it with the same status. (Applause) Thank you. That was it, by the way. left.Well I heard a great story recently ââ¬â I love telling it ââ¬âà of a little girl who was in a drawing lesson. She was sixà and she was at the back, drawing,à and the teacher said this little girl hardly everà paid attention, and in this drawing lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated and she went over to herà and she said, ââ¬Å"What are you drawing? â⬠à And the girl said, ââ¬Å"I'm drawing a picture of God. â⬠à And the teacher said, ââ¬Å"But nobody knows what God looks like. â⬠à And the girl said, ââ¬Å"They will in a minute. â⬠à (Laughter) When my son was four in England ââ¬âà actually he was four everywhere, to be honest. Laughter)à If we're being strict about it, wherever he went, he was four that year. He was in the Nativity play. Do you remember the story? No, it was big. It was a big story. Mel Gibson did the sequel. You may have seen it: ââ¬Å"Nativity II. â⬠But James got the part of Joseph,à which we were thrilled about. We considered this to be one of the lead parts. We had the place crammed full of ag ents in T-shirts:à ââ¬Å"James Robinson IS Joseph! â⬠(Laughter)He didn't have to speak, but you know the bità where the three kings come in. They come in bearing gifts,à and they bring gold, frankincense and myrhh.This really happened. We were sitting thereà and I think they just went out of sequence,à because we talked to the little boy afterward and we said,à ââ¬Å"You OK with that? â⬠And he said, ââ¬Å"Yeah, why? Was that wrong? ââ¬Å"They just switched, that was it. Anyway, the three boys came in ââ¬âà four-year-olds with tea towels on their heads ââ¬âà and they put these boxes down,à and the first boy said, ââ¬Å"I bring you gold. â⬠à And the second boy said, ââ¬Å"I bring you myrhh. â⬠à And the third boy said, ââ¬Å"Frank sent this. â⬠(Laughter) What these things have in common is that kids will take a chance. If they don't know, they'll have a go.Am I right? They're not frightened of being wrong. Now, I don't me an to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. What we do know is,à if you're not prepared to be wrong,à you'll never come up with anything original ââ¬âà if you're not prepared to be wrong. And by the time they get to be adults,à most kids have lost that capacity. They have become frightened of being wrong. way. Weà where mistakesà And the result is that we are educating people out ofà their creative capacities. Picasso once said this ââ¬âà he said that all children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.I believe this passionately,à that we don't grow into creativity,à we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it. So why is this? I lived in Stratford-on-Avon until about five years ago. In fact, we moved from Stratford to Los Angeles. So you can imagine what a seamless transition that was. Actually, weà just outside Stratford, which is whereà Shakespeare's father was born. Are you struck by a ne w thought? I was. You don't think of Shakespeare having a father, do you? Do you? Because you don't think ofà Shakespeare being a child, do you? Shakespeare being seven? I never thought of it.I mean, he wasà seven at some point. He was inà somebody's English class, wasn't he? How annoying would that be? (Laughter) ââ¬Å"Must try harder. â⬠Being sent to bed by his dad, you know,à to Shakespeare, ââ¬Å"Go to bed, now,â⬠à to William Shakespeare, ââ¬Å"and put the pencil down. And stop speaking like that. It's confusing everybody. â⬠à (Laughter) Anyway, we moved from Stratford to Los Angeles,à and I just want to say a word about the transition, actually. My son didn't want to come. I've got two kids. He's 21 now; my daughter's 16. He didn't want to come to Los Angeles. He loved it,à but he had a girlfriend in England.This was the love of his life, Sarah. He'd known her for a month. Mind you, they'd had their fourth anniversary,à because it's a long t ime when you're 16. Anyway, he was really upset on the plane,à and he said, ââ¬Å"I'll never find another girl like Sarah. â⬠à And we were rather pleased about that, frankly,à because she was the main reason we were leaving the country. (Laughter) But something strikes you when you move to Americaà and when you travel around the world:à Every education system on earth has the same hierarchy of subjects. Every one. Doesn't matter where you go. You'd think it would be otherwise, but it isn't.At the top are mathematics and languages,à then the humanities, and the bottom are the arts. Everywhere on Earth. And in pretty much every system too,à there's a hierarchy within the arts. Art and music are normally given a higher status in schoolsà than drama and dance. There isn't an education system on the planetà that teaches dance everyday to childrenà the way we teach them mathematics. Why? Why not? I think this is rather important. I think math is very important, b ut so is dance. Children dance all the time if they're allowed to, we all do. We all have bodies, don't we? Did I miss a meeting? Laughter) Truthfully, what happens is,à as children grow up, we start to educate themà progressively from the waist up. And then we focus on their heads. And slightly to one side. If you were to visit education, as an alien,à and say ââ¬Å"What's it for, public education? â⬠à I think you'd have to conclude ââ¬â if you look at the output,à who really succeeds by this,à who does everything that they should,à who gets all the brownie points, who are the winners ââ¬âà I think you'd have to conclude the whole purpose of public educationà throughout the worldà is to produce university professors. Isn't it?They're the people who come out the top. And I used to be one, so there. (Laughter)à And I like university professors, but you know,à we shouldn't hold them up as the high-water mark of all human achievement. life, another à them. Thereââ¬â¢sà not all of them, but typically ââ¬â they live in their heads. They live up there, and slightly to one side. They're disembodied, you know, in a kind of literal way. They look upon their bodyà as a form of transport for their heads, don't they? meetings. Ifà by the way, get yourself along to a residential conferenceà of senior academics,à and pop into the discotheque on the final night. Laughter) And there you will see it ââ¬â grown men and womenà writhing uncontrollably, off the beat,à waiting until it ends so they can go home and write a paper about it. Now our education system is predicated on the idea of academic ability. And there's a reason. The whole system was invented ââ¬â around the world, there wereà no public systems of education, really, before the 19th century. They all came into beingà to meet the needs of industrialism. So the hierarchy is rooted on two ideas. Number one, that the most useful subjects for workà are at the top.So you were probably steered benignly awayà from things at school when you were a kid, things you liked,à on the grounds that you wouldà never get a job doing that. Is that right? Don't do music, you're not going to be a musician;à don't do art, you won't be an artist. Benign advice ââ¬â now, profoundly mistaken. The whole worldà is engulfed in a revolution. And the second is academic ability, which has really come to dominateà our view of intelligence,à because the universities designed the system in their image. If you think of it, the whole systemà of public education around the world is a protracted processà of university entrance.And the consequence is that many highly talented,à brilliant, creative people think they're not,à because the thing they were good at schoolà wasn't valued, or was actually stigmatized. And I think we can't afford to go on that way. In the next 30 years, according to UNESCO,à graduating throughà combinati on ofà technology and its transformation effect on work, and demographyà and the huge explosion in population. Suddenly, degrees aren't worth anything. Isn't that true? When I was a student, if you had a degree, you had a job. If you didn't have a job it's because you didn't want one.And I didn't want one, frankly. (Laughter)à But now kids with degrees are oftenà heading home to carry on playing video games,à because you need an MA where the previous job required a BA,à other. Itââ¬â¢sà And it indicates the whole structure of educationà is shifting beneath our feet. We need to radically rethinkà our view of intelligence. We know three things about intelligence. One, it's diverse. We think about the world in all the waysà that we experience it. We think visually,à we think in sound, we think kinesthetically. We think in abstract terms, we think in movement.Secondly, intelligence is dynamic. If you look at the interactions of a human brain, as we heardà yest erday from a number of presentations,à intelligence is wonderfully interactive. The brain isn't divided into compartments. In fact, creativity ââ¬â which I define as the processà of having original ideas that have value ââ¬âà more often than not comes about through the interactionà of different disciplinary ways of seeing things. The brain is intentionally ââ¬â by the way,à there's a shaft of nerves that joins the two halves of the brainà called the corpus callosum. It's thicker in women.Following off from Helen yesterday, I thinkà this is probably why women are better at multi-tasking. Because you are, aren't you? There's a raft of research, but I know it from my personal life. If my wife is cooking a meal at home ââ¬âà which is not often, thankfully. (Laughter)à But you know, she's doing ââ¬â no, she's good at some things ââ¬âà but if she's cooking, you know,à she's dealing with people on the phone,à she's talking to the kids, she's painting the ceiling,à she's doing open-heart surgery over here. If I'm cooking, the door is shut, the kids are out,à the phone's on the hook, if she comes in I get annoyed.I say, ââ¬Å"Terry, please, I'm trying to fry an egg in here. Give me a break. â⬠(Laughter)à Actually, you know that old philosophical thing,à if a tree falls in a forest and nobody hears it,à did it happen? Remember that old chestnut? I saw a great t-shirt really recently which said, ââ¬Å"If a man speaks his mindà in a forest, and no woman hears him,à is he still wrong? â⬠(Laughter) And the third thing about intelligence is,à it's distinct. I'm doing a new book at the momentcalled ââ¬Å"Epiphany,â⬠which is based on a series ofà interviews with people about how they discoveredà their talent.I'm fascinated by how people got to be there. It's really prompted by a conversation I hadà with a wonderful woman who maybe most peopleà have never heard of; she's called Gillian Lynne ââ¬âà have you heard of her? Some have. She's a choreographerà and everybody knows her work. She did ââ¬Å"Catsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Phantom of the Opera. â⬠à She's wonderful. I used to be on the board of the Royal Ballet in England,à as you can see. Anyway, Gillian and I had lunch one day and I said,à ââ¬Å"Gillian, how'd you get to be a dancer? â⬠And she saidà it was interesting; when she was at school,à she was really hopeless.And the school, in the '30s,à wrote to her parents and said, ââ¬Å"We thinkà Gillian has a learning disorder. â⬠She couldn't concentrate;à she was fidgeting. I think now they'd sayà she had ADHD. Wouldn't you? But this was the 1930s,à and ADHD hadn't been invented at this point. It wasn't an available condition. (Laughter)à People weren't aware they could have that. Anyway, she went to see this specialist. So, this oak-paneled room,à and she was there with her mother,à and she was led and sat on this chair at the end,à and she sat on her hands for 20 minutes whileà this man talked to her mother about allà the problems Gillian was having at school.And at the end of it ââ¬âà because she was disturbing people;à her homework was always late; and so on,à little kid of eight ââ¬â in the end, the doctor went and satà next to Gillian and said, ââ¬Å"Gillian,à I've listened to all these things that your mother'sà told me, and I need to speak to her privately. â⬠à He said, ââ¬Å"Wait here. We'll be back; we won't be very long,â⬠à and they went and left her. But as they went out the room, he turned on the radioà that was sitting on his desk. And when theyà got out the room, he said to her mother,à ââ¬Å"Just stand and watch her. â⬠And the minute they left the room,à she said, she was on her feet, moving to the music.And they watched for a few minutesà and he turned to her mother and said,à ââ¬Å"Mrs. Lynne, Gillian isn't sick; s he's a dancer. Take her to a dance school. â⬠I said, ââ¬Å"What happened? â⬠à She said, ââ¬Å"She did. I can't tell you how wonderful it was. We walked in this room and it was full ofà people like me. People who couldn't sit still. People who had to move to think. â⬠Who had to move to think. They did ballet; they did tap; they did jazz;à they did modern; they did contemporary. She was eventually auditioned for the Royal Ballet School;à she became a soloist; she had a wonderful careerà at the Royal Ballet.She eventually graduatedà from the Royal Ballet School andà founded her own company ââ¬â the Gillian Lynne Dance Company ââ¬âà met Andrew Lloyd Weber. She's been responsible forsome of the most successful musical theaterà productions in history; she's given pleasure to millions;à and she's a multi-millionaire. Somebody elseà might have put her on medication and told herà to calm down. Now, I think â⬠¦ (Applause) What I think it comes to is this:à Al Gore spoke the other nightabout ecology and the revolution that was triggered by Rachel Carson.I believe our only hope for the futureà is to adopt a new conception of human ecology,à one in which we start to reconstitute our conceptionà of the richness of human capacity. Our education system has mined our minds in the wayà that we strip-mine the earth: for a particular commodity. And for the future, it won't serve us. We have to rethink the fundamental principlesà on which we're educating our children. There wasà a wonderful quote by Jonas Salk, who said, ââ¬Å"If all the insectsà were to disappear from the earth,à within 50 years all life on Earth would end.If all human beings disappeared from the earth,à within 50 years all forms of life would flourish. ââ¬Å"And he's right. What TED celebrates is the gift of the human imagination. We have to be careful now that we use this giftà wisely and that we avert some of the scenariosà that w e've talked about. And the only wayà we'll do it is by seeing our creative capacitiesà for the richness they are and seeingà our children for the hope that they are. And our taskà is to educate their whole being, so they can face this future. By the way ââ¬â we may not see this future,à but they will. And our job is to helpà them make something of it.
